Out of darkness
Sunlight sets the mists on fire

Suddenly aflame

I had stopped

Words and Thoughts, for Life
~
Out of darkness
Sunlight sets the mists on fire
~
And all of Shropshire’s
Suddenly aflame
~
I had stopped
To memorise the sight
~
Now travel on
Though somehow not the same.

~
As I gaze
In the evening light
~
At the creatures
Who share being’s birth
~
I am grateful
For the gift of life
~
And all there is
In our beautiful earth.
~

~
In the morning
I climb
~
And time
Is in love with eternity
~
And here there is
No consternation
~
The mystery
Of life is still
~
And now the heart
Can have its fill
~
Of sweet and satisfying
Consolation.

“We are made for transcendence and endless horizons”
Richard Rohr
From hills and mountains, beaches and harbours, you get that sense of “endless horizons”, that draw us out of ourselves. Shropshire has plenty of the first, and none of the rest!
This photograph of Corndon Hill was taken from the ridge of Stiperstones, and the cloud creates that sense of endlessness.
And there is something transcendent, also, I think, to the experience of being on top of a hill.
You have that sense of a changed perspective from ordinary life, even a sense of special connection with nature, the universe, with God.
It expands my sense of being human – made for transcendence and endless horizons.

There’s a light
That shines in the darkness
Amongst these Shropshire hills
~
And as I walk
With the light in the darkness
All my anxiety stills
~
And my heart with hope
And happiness fills
As I walk
~
With the light
In the darkness
Amongst these Shropshire hills.

.
The buzzard soars
Over Haughmond Hill
.
With such grace
Such natural skill
.
Over the fields below
And there I go
.
In nature’s landscape
All in flow
.
And feel at home
And all aglow.
.

~
Here the kite
And the buzzard cry
~
And woodpeckers swoop
And dragonflies roam
~
And all is green
Except for the sky
~
So infinitely blue
And there is you
~
It feels like home
Where there doesn’t
~
Need to be
A why.
~

Nature surrounds us with so many wonderful colours, but especially with greens!
I wrote this poem after being struck by greens everywhere and all around me on my Shropshire walk today…
.
It felt as if I had never seen
So much greenness
.
As if the spiritual force
Of life itself were green
.
As if there had never been
Another shade
.
To paint
The pathway plants
.
As if every blade
Of grass
.
For green
Did dance.
.

~
What a mystery
It is to exist
~
Life passing
Like a surprising mist
~
Rising over the hills
Revealing sights
~
More wonderful
More beautiful still.
