Words and Thoughts, for Life

It is quiet in the wood
So quiet that it’s understood
You must walk silently.
Then you hear the birdsong
And you realise nothing’s wrong
With silence:
Let the sounds of nature speak
To all who would now listen –
Only in quietness seek.

It is the Great Wood:
“Morchet”, “Mor Coed”
Becoming “Morchard Bishop”
Or to locals just “Morchard”
~
In winter impassable
Due to the mud
In summer a wonder
To Devon blood
~
The trees’ breathing
Ensures we survive
Each moment’s photosynthesis
Each moment we are alive.
~

With red
Celebrations
After a stormy night

And in imagination I’m led
By nature and a million words
Which in the silence I have heard

That might
Set Devon all alight.

our story

Of birth
Childhood and growth

What would be next
We wondered
.
Gazing
At the richest colours
.
In fascination
Both.
~

Breaking against the waves
The coast is always falling away
Into silence. Yet the sea
Is an endless mystery
In which we may
Find ourselves
Even after drowning.
You are my firebird
flame-red, flame-yellow
~
over the ash-black
of your wings
~
the white-hot
flickering of your flight.
~
You are my phoenix
my miracle-worker
~
unaware of the magic
you make in me
~
your worshipper
as you flit across the field.
On March 18th I will be giving an author afternoon event at The Bookery, Crediton in Devon, UK, where I also volunteer.

Ponies on Bellever
Standing still as the granite
As time
As forever.

The buzzard overhead
And Dartmoor behind
Is a kind
Of experience
I never had before:

What I saw
On that day
Transformed my way
And lifted me on high
That buzzard soaring in the sky.
